History of Inden

Inden is a form of leather craft made by applying design patterns to deerskin using lacquer.

Inden has its roots in the Nara Period (710–794).

During the Warring States Period (1467–1590), it was widely used to decorate the armors and helmets of warlords.
The art of Inden that was perfected more than 400 years ago among the mountains of Koshu (Yamanashi prefecture)
came to be called Koshu Inden, and is designated a Traditional Craft of Japan.
Its traditional technique has been passed down through the 400-year period to this day.

Beautiful, soft deerskin is also light, durable and breathable.
By adding the distinctly Japanese texture of lacquer to such deerskin,
Inden offers both modern functionality and style as a proud craft of Japan.
